Beginning with the arrival of David Marsden as programming director in 1978, CFNY became one of the
first commercial radio stations to play alternative music.
In 1985, after years of ownership changes, the station was sold to Selkirk Communications. By this time, the station had become internationally famous and was briefly available in North America via satellite.
Despite higher ratings, in 1988 Selkirk switched to a Top 40 format and left its alternative format to weekends and late nights. Many longtime listeners were left unhappy; and eventually, much of the staff either resigned or were fired.
In 1989, Selkirk was acquired by MacLean-Hunter,
who shifted the format to that of a more conventional modern rock station. MacLean-Hunter was sold Off to Rogers Communications in 1994, which then spun its radio holdings to Corus Entertainment in 1999.
The CFNY Spirit of Radio Fan Page is devoted to CFNY, particularly its 1980's incarnation.
