When it was launched in 1991 under the ownership of Noble Broadcasting, KNDD was consulted by sister 91X programming team Kevin Stapleford and Michael Halloran as Rick Lambert became the station's first PD. Phil Manning took over programming in 1996. In 1992 ownership changed from Noble to Viacom. Then in 1996 the station was acquired by Entercom.
At noon on December 18, 2003 the station underwent massive changes, jettisoning its on-air staff and returning to a "classic alternative" format which emphasized early 1990's alternative acts, influential punk predecessors, and new music from local acts. The very next day, competitor KRQI 96.5 FM switched from an 80's pop-oriented format to a similar classic alternative format only without the new local acts. Only a few months earlier, long-time KNDD morning DJ Andy Savage left for KRQI after the expiration of his contract.
