The station's roots trace back to 1972 when KROQ was at 1500 on the AM dial. Crosstown radio owner Ken Roberts purchased the station after it moved to 106.7 FM. Throughout the 70s the station was owned by Mandeville Canyon Broadcasting, who eventually sold to CBS Radio. The station began to drift from its freeform heritage in 1979 when Rick Carroll became PD and implemented a format that came to be known as "rock of the 80s." Carroll consulted other stations using this format until his untimely death in 1989.
The station presents several concerts and listener events throughout the year including its annual Weenie Roast every June. In 1989 the station kicked Off its annual "Almost Acoustic Christmas." KROQ is the home of syndicated shows Loveline, Kevin & Bean and Jed The Fish's Out of Order.
